THE BIBLICAL PICTURE OF AN IDEAL HUSBAND:
Somebody said, “Where there is anything that’s designed, there is a designer. Whether it’s a building, a car 🚘 or a computer software – or even marriage – there is always a Mastermind behind the Masterpiece. God, The Mastermind of marriage, also has a plan for how marriage works best.” So, if the philosophy of the world dictates the way you run your home and deal with your spouse, then it’s time to change. There is a better way – God’s Way – to live and run your family.
God’s idea of a husband is different from that of the world, just as His thoughts and ways are poles apart from those of the world. He paints a perfect picture of an ideal husband for us in His Word. He is:
1. Godly. “Godly” here is not in the sense the world uses the word. A godly man is more than a good, decent or religious man. He is a man who has genuinely repented of his sins, and is living a New Life in Christ – a genuinely born-again Christian.
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV.
He is a man with integrity, honour, and living fully by the Word of God. He places his family alongside God, and his priorities are God First, his family second, and his work or other interests a distant third. His desire is to have all the members of his family serving God and being a part of everything God has for them. He loves his wife and children more than anyone else, and protects them physically, emotionally, spiritually and financially. He is the head of the home but loves his wife as much as Christ loves the Church, cherishes her above all else, and doesn’t demean her in any way.
2. A man of one woman. An ideal man is not polygamous. He doesn’t marry many wives and have many mistresses and children, just to show that he is potent or manly. He also “leaves and cleaves” to his wife. God frowns at polygamy. His original plan and standard for marriage is monogamy.
“But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.”
Mark 10:6-9 KJV.
His prescription for those who hold a high spiritual office like men who are the spiritual head of the home is to be “the husband of one wife”
“A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.”
1 Timothy 3:2, 12 KJV
“If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.”
Titus 1:6 KJV.
3. Faithful to his spouse: An ideal husband is not a playboy. He doesn’t flirt around with women to test whether they are fertile or not, nor does he have extramarital affairs. Like Job, he makes bold to say, “I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?”
Job 31:1 KJV.
He also doesn’t walk in and out of marriage as he pleases: “Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant. And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth. For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.”
Malachi 2:14-16 KJV.
4. Honest and open to his wife. A godly man is “completely honest.” Although the world says telling the truth is not that simple, he sees everything in black and white, and tells the truth always. He also doesn’t keep secrets from his wife “Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the LORD, but also in the sight of men.”
2 Corinthians 8:21 KJV.
5. The economic provider of the family: “But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.”
1 Timothy 5:8 KJV, the above Scripture says it without mincing words, what is required of an ideal husband. He must work to provide for his household.
More of who an ideal husband is from the Bible perspective will be given in subsequent chapters.
SUMMARY:
People, culture, and the society don’t dictate who an ideal husband is, because, by their philosophies, traditions, and customs, they can’t make a man ideal or perfect for a woman.
Job 14:4 asks,
“Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.” KJV.
Not one man, woman, culture or society can bring out of the natural man the virtue, traits and character needed to make a marriage work, for marriage is sacred and noble: “Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.”
Hebrews 13:4 KJV. But God knows what it takes to make a marriage work, and He alone can provide those ingredients. He not only instituted the marriage union, He also made man and knows the man that is compatible for and best fit for every woman.
So, let Him choose the ideal husband for you if you are a woman, for He is the Peerless Matchmaker, and if you are a man, let Him make you the ideal man that will make the woman He gives you happy and fulfilled. The Bible is His handbook on marriage. Make it your guide on knowing and finding His ideal husband; it gives you the perfect picture of who he is.
This column is also a great help because it paints the Biblical picture of the ideal husband.
“Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read: no one of these shall fail, none shall want her mate: for my mouth it hath commanded, and his spirit it hath gathered them.”
Isaiah 34:16 KJV
