Continuation of God’s Expectations of A Husband:
PROVISION:
Being the head of the home is not the only responsibility the husband has. In 1 Timothy 5:8, Apostle Paul presents another responsibility: “But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.”
1 Timothy 5:8 KJV
Thus, the man should set an example for his family by working honestly and diligently. Marriage is partly a financial undertaking, and the husband has a responsibility to support his family. As a husband, your earnings are not solely your own but also your wife’s because both of you raise your children. The man’s breadwinner role had continued to decline in recent times, because of more women entering the workforce with higher academic and professional qualifications and the globalised economy crunch forcing more families to rely on more than one income source. In a world where the job market is unstable, men are much more accepting of the shared breadwinner role with their wives in order to cope with the catalogue of financial obligations like paying all sorts of utility bills, buying the family’s daily needs, fulfilling major payouts such as a mortgage and children’s school fees, and shelling out some good cash for unplanned expenses when sickness or injury occurs.
Although God encourages this shared breadwinner role: Proverbs 31:10-31: “Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar. She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms. She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night. She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple. Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant. Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.”
Proverbs 31:10-31 KJV
The man remains the primary income-earner and breadwinner of the family. When the chips are down, he is expected to assume his responsibility of providing for the home. He will not, for whatever reason, tolerate any man neglecting his responsibility.
Over the years, it’s been observed that many men neglect this role or abdicate it to their wives, relatives, friends or even the Church because they don’t truly love their wives, they are miserly and unfaithful to their families or they are lazy and not ready to work.
God expects every man to work and fend for himself and his family. He says to the menfolk in Genesis 3:19: “In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread,…..
Genesis 3:19 KJV
Any man who shrinks from this responsibility, therefore, will not only lose his wife’s respect, but also incur God’s displeasure. God crowns industry with His blessings, but loads idleness with His curse, for according to His Word, “….if any would not work, neither should he eat.”
2 Thessalonians 3:10 KJV.
The Christian husband who neglects this duty commits a grave sin, for the Bible pronounces him an infidel— an outright unbeliever or sinner: “But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.”
1 Timothy 5:8 KJV. So, husband; be a provider, not an infidel.
Aside from providing the material, financial or economic need of the wife, the man is also expected to provide for her other needs. A woman needs security, physical help, emotional support and Spiritual soundness, and all these needs are met in different ways by the husband.
Security, for instance, means so much to a woman. Although it is a very broad term and general in meaning, it is a woman’s greatest need aside from her Spiritual growth. Whether she is growing up with her parents or living with her husband, she has the genuine need to be secure. A woman needs to know she is safe and will be provided for in every aspect.
A woman’s basic need for security is satisfied by adequate protection and provision given by God through her husband. Every wife craves a feeling of security from her husband. Since the beginning of time, man has provided and protected his family. A husband needs to give his wife that feeling of stability. No matter what happens, she needs to know that he will keep her safe.
Love and affection, financial provision, protection, communication, and leadership are the ingredients that satisfy the woman’s every need.
