GUIDE TO CHILD TRAINING:
Many parents are at a loss as to how to train their children. Just too many have missed this all too important milestone in this journey called marriage. Consequent upon this, the world today is filled with delinquents.
Child training is very important and its neglect is always catastrophic; life are ruined and many parents suffer untold heartaches. The consequences of the neglect of child training is not only suffered in this life but in eternity also. Because many parents have continued to fail in child training as a result of ignorance or even negligence, I am going to give you seven points in this chapter that will act as guidelines in training our children. If we train our children following these guidelines, they will be well-trained. They will turn out to be happy, successful, godly and useful children. And you too will be greatly blessed for it. The seven guides are:
1. Parental Example
2. Persuasive Exhortation
3. Positive Encouragement
4. Prompt Explanation
5. Pleasant Experiences
6. Profitable Exercise
7. Practical Education
PARENTAL EXAMPLE: “Behold, every one that useth proverbs shall use this proverb against thee, saying, As is the mother, so is her daughter.”
Ezekiel 16:44 KJV
The first step in child training is Parental Example. The power of parental example should not be undermined. Children learn very fast from what they see more than what they hear. One very important fact overlooked by parents but which you will do well to note is that your child begins to learn
from your actions before he begins to learn from your words. If your child lives with criticism, he learns to condemn. If he lives in an atmosphere of hostility, he learns to fight. If he lives with ridicule he learns to be shy or have a complex. If he lives with shame he learns to feel worthless.
PERSUASIVE EXHORTATION:
“My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:”
Our child should not be left untaught. Give him exhortation, instruction and teach him in a most persuasive manner. When should this start? We start training children, teaching, exhorting, instructing and helping them to understand the word of God right from the cradle. You must teach the child the difference between right and wrong. And this must be done simply enough for him to understand.
“For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:”
Isaiah 28:10 KJV
As we give the child Persuasive Exhortation we must follow up by Positive Encouragement.
