Guide To Child Training Continues:
TENDERNESS / THANKFULNESS:
We must be tender with our children. We must remember that they are fragile and helpless. We must not drive them too hard. We must teach them how to be thankful early in life. We must teach them how to show appreciation or gratitude for help or other material gift 🎁 received from either man or God. Children should be taught to say “Thank you, daddy” or “Thank you, mummy”. They should also be taught to give praises to God Almighty for blessings received.
INVOLVEMENT:
Parents need to be involved in their children’s lives to know the effect different influences are having upon them. We need to sense when the children are in danger. This also helps us to discern problems before they develop. Whether it is work, play, household chores or recreation, your children will enjoy doing it with you and will be open to learning through your involvement.
COMMUNICATION:
Communication is basic and essential in every relationship. When communication breaks down, the result is chaos. The components of communication are Desire, Talking, Listening, and Understanding.
For communication to be effective the desire to communicate cannot be over-emphasised.
As a matter of fact, communication becomes a pleasant experience when it is meeting the desire to communicate. When this is not so, withdrawal, distancing, rejection, silence and passivity ensue.
This is equally an important element for effective communication. For talk to be effective, the tone of your voice and your facial expression matter a lot. Depending on the nature of the talk, your voice and facial expression can either be soft and pleasant, or otherwise firm. Whatever the case, the child must not perceive any kind of negative emotion in your talk.
Listening on the other hand is an essential aspect of communication. Listening to our children is not an easy habit, yet it must be cultivated. Listening may be casual, friendly, intense, random or sympathetic. When listening to your child listen to the words as well as the feeling or emotion behind what is being said.
Understanding is another important aspect of communication. When you instruct your children, don’t just assume that they understand what you mean. And when a child talks to you, seek to really understand what the child means. The meaning you attribute to what is said may be totally different from what the child really means.
ACCEPTANCE:
Let your children feel accepted and loved. Let each child know that he belongs to the family and he is wanted there. When a child has the knowledge and is assured that he is not s stranger but an accepted member of the family, it builds his confidence.
LOVE:
Parental love is as needful for the spiritual and emotional growth of the child as food is to the body. When a child knows that he is loved he gains a sense of security which makes him grow up in a wholesome manner.
EXAMPLE:
Children are imitators. The lifestyle and habits of parents get easily transmitted to their children. Parents bad practices will induce waywardness in the child; while abstinence from evil deeds and wrong habits will teach the child to live a morally clean life. You have a responsibility to be a perfect example for your children to emulate.
