I remember when Nigerian Twitter got #SARS disbanded a few months ago and we all rejoiced – only for them to regroup and come back even harder – I mean a woman was shot in the mouth recently because she allegedly refused a police officer’s advances!
It’s actually unreal. I know how many times I’ve taken out my AirPods and hidden my phone in my clothes when approaching an armed forces checkpoint whilst in Nigeria.l because one can’t know the type of officers you’d meet there.
The people that are meant to protect are the ones that say things like “I will kill you here and nothing will happen” whilst extorting money from their victims.
This is why we have to stand up. I am immensely proud of how many young Nigerians came out today 9th of October to protest against this menace called police brutality being perpetrated mostly by the “Special Anti-Robbery Squad” aka SARS. An anti-robbery squad that is known for robbing and sometimes murdering the citizens of the country that they’re hired to protect.
Enough is enough. We have come together as one voice, celebrities from around the world have lent their voices to our cry just as we cried with the rest of the world when the Black Lives Matter issue took Centre-stage.
It’s time to save Nigerian lives. Our Mothers are tired of finding their children’s bodies ridden with security agents’ bullets because they couldn’t provide the money being forced out of them in an obscure location with no access to their families.
We have no more tears.
