Hey everyone I’m super excited to write this travel post as it’s the very first time I’ve visited a country in the Asian continent! Qatar is bordered only by Saudi Arabia and has the highest GDP per capita rate in the whole world! The Qatari economy is built upon the globe’s third largest natural gas and oil reserves.
But enough history – what took me to Qatar? My sister and I were on our way home to London for the holidays and decided to take a flight with a long stopover – and make a holiday out of it! Qatar offers free visas on arrival to over 80 countries – we just had to take the opportunity as it was presented.
We arrived at 12am Qatari time and spent an hour getting through immigration (with so many nationalities getting free visas I could understand why the queue for immigration was long) but we eventually got through and our hotel, the Golden Ocean Hotel, offered free airport rides so we hopped into our ride and got to see the beautiful capital, Doha at night – the lights were lovely to behold!
We got up early the next morning and decided to explore the city a little, and so having googled things near our hotel beforehand, we headed out to the Souq Waqif (which is translated to the “standing market”).
The Souq Waqif is an ancient market place that though well maintained, still retained its original architectural appearance. We were able to bargain the prices of a few items and then we headed to a beautiful restaurant called Damasca One for breakfast.
Did I mention there was free wifi everywhere? Including the Souq Waqif, and that everyone spoke English as well as Arabic! Very handy for us I tell you lol.
After enjoying exploring the city we headed back to the hotel and got a free airport shuttle back to the airport; the airport is so beautiful! We didn’t get to see it in all it’s Glory when we arrived due to coming in at night, it’s currently being voted as the best airport in the world and I cannot dispute it at the moment haha.
Qatar was a lovely experience, everyone was friendly and it was super peaceful – I’d definitely advise everyone to visit!
