Before I proceed, I would like to thank Dr. Peters for giving me the opportunity to do this. We, at MyTutorAfrica, are very grateful.
My name is Deba Osaghae, founder of MyTutorAfrica. In this post, I would be telling you about MyTutorAfrica and letting you in on some of our recent activities.
Some years ago, while taking a walk with my dad, he started to tell me about how the principle of snow was used to make refrigerators and also how the study of birds and their flying mechanisms gave rise to airplanes.
I was very engrossed and fascinated by the stories and that was really all there was to that experience at the time.
A few years later, those same stories came to mind again and I started to think on how people really just took clues from the environment and made all kinds of things we now call ‘inventions’ today. Some others didn’t exactly take clues from their environment in that sense, but they observed problems the world was facing at the time and sought to find solutions.
Shortly after that period, my further meditation on the matter made me realize that we are all problem solvers. You know why? We were all made in God’s likeness, meaning we have an in-built capacity to solve problems.
God saw darkness and made light. He procured a solution!
Little wonder human beings have invented many things we now enjoy today!
Think about it, a few years ago, frying with oil and a pan was accepted and seemed to pose no threat, but with more research on many diseases, lipids in those oils were restricted in the diets of the sufferers. What did humans then do?
They provided the air fryer. A labour-saving device that fries food without oil! Problem solving.
I also realised that if there are still many problems in the world, humans still have work to do.
But you see, the core of invention is knowledge and the core of knowledge is curiosity and passion.
And so, I realised that if we are going to solve our problems in this nation, rather than foreigners having to do so all the time, something has to be done about our education system.
It pains me to see people just want to finish school quickly to be able to venture into what they really like, or what they think they like. It pains me to see people treat education as unimportant, when in fact, without it, we’re going nowhere.
It pains me to see our professionals leave the country or foreigners ruling or professionals who ‘don’t know their onions’, ruling.
But, can they be blamed? The education system in this country has numerous loopholes that have to be identified and dealt with. People have to enjoy education, people must have a zeal to want know more, people must know that they are problem solvers!
Hence, MyTutorAfrica came about. It is an initiative of the Awaken Africa foundation aimed at raising the education standards in Africa.
Since it started, we have been able to have three live Instagram sessions, one on energy balances (a course in chemical engineering, which was requested by a student), one on photography ( which dealt with all aspiring photographers would need to know concerning photography) and the last one, web design.
We have recently launched our next project, tagged #MYCAREERPATH. This started because we were able to identify the problem of poor career counseling for Nigerian students. Many students do not have enough information about courses they hope to study in the university and they therefore enter blindly, either to see that they do not like the courses and waste time by trying to transfer to other courses or remain in those courses and stay passive students, just waiting to graduate. A few may, however, end up liking the courses.
Hence, #MYCAREERPATH is a YouTube series in which individuals who have excelled in their various courses of study are interviewed. They tell us why they chose the courses they did, lessons they learned in school, what prospective students should know and also, their advice to prospective students to attain academic excellence as well.

*And remember, while not everyone may be an inventor or a class whiz, we are all problem solvers in our different spheres of life. We can do things better. But first, we need to know better.*
