First of all: Happy Valentine’s Day!
Now that we’ve got the niceties out of the way, let’s get down to business.
Definition: Entitlement/ɪnˈtʌɪt(ə)lmənt/noun
- the fact of having a right to something.
- the amount to which a person has a right.
- the belief that one is inherently deserving of privileges or special treatment.
So many people have it. It’s almost a part of human nature that you have to will yourself out of having – why, you may be wondering? Because it’s toxic; that belief that you are deserving of something, of which you in actual fact don’t deserve, will lead you to think/act/say things that are out of place.
Sometimes entitlement masks as concern. Other times it’s blatant forcefulness of perceived ownership. Whatever it comes as, drop that behavior today please. If no one has explicitly verbalized to you that you have the right to something, don’t assume you do.
Have the decency to be grateful for things given to you, no matter the relationship or how long it’s been going on. If someone shares their time, resources, affection – anything – be grateful. Be it the first time or the 237th time. It’s how respect continues to remain present in relationships, when people aren’t taken for granted – which is what entitlement portrays itself as to the receiving party.
Thanks for reading my mini rant, now go be good people and love on your special ones, it’s the season of love!
Lots of love,
