“The only constant in life, is change.“
Heraclitus
Some of you may have liked maths in school, whilst others may not. For me, I liked maths when I was getting it right (which fortunately was most of the time) but I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite subject. Right now in my masters, it’s the math in my epidemiology module that makes me have to actively study as compared to the concepts in other modules that I understand instantly, but I guess that’s just the way it is, and as my people say – we move.
The phrase “we move” basically means what it says on the tin, but on a deeper level it describes pushing past difficult situations, mostly without thoroughly thrashing the issue out. Now I won’t tell you to stop using the ideology, because many a time we don’t have the luxury of addressing every issue line by line – because life carries on. It’s as inevitable as change – which is the meat of this article.
How conversant are you with the concept of change? Does it make you nervous, worried or giddy? Or something in between that you can’t quite label it? Have you ever really thought about your feelings towards change? You might want to if you haven’t, because change is an essential part of life.
If everything remained the same as when life started, we all quite frankly wouldn’t be here. You wouldn’t be reading something I wrote in my home in London from the comfort of your room in Lagos, Accra or Atlanta – because it was change that brought about the internet, phones, blogs…you get the picture?
I’m at a point in my life where EVERYTHING is changing. Yet, there’s a peace I have thanks be to God and my support system, but also because I grew up rather accustomed to change. For example, I have never started and finished at one school in my entire life; I’ve always moved for various reasons and with that came making new friends, understanding new teacher’s styles of marking, new uniforms – new everything. So I’ve got lots of practice lol and it has prepared me for this point in my life where I’m faced with a total life upheaval.
So I would like to leave you with this thought: what’s your relationship with change like, and what would you like it to be like?
Till next time,
Dr. ETP xo
